Tuxpan

We left Ciudad Victoria around the same time we departed all the other cities, and made way for the long trek to Tuxpan, Veracruz. The distance is under 600 kilometers, but the traffic and quality of the roads makes traveling an extremely dangerous procedure. Remember yesterday when I said that the roads were good?

I don't either. The roads to Tuxpan were terrible, some of the worst roads I've ever been on my entire life. The road was very narrow with no shoulders, and it was full of curves making passing near impossible. The way the locals drive don't make things any easier either. Too often, to locals will drive recklessly, passing around corners and speeding through slower zones. Being here is like being on highway 63, but with a much smaller road with no passing lanes.

The scenery of the drive itself was very beautiful. Upon leaving Victoria, we climbed into the mountains, going 1000 meters above sea level. As we climbed we looked at the clouds below us, and saw some old volcanoes legendary in the region.

After leaving the mountains, we entered the Tropic of Cancer, and truly entered jungle territory. From Ciudad Valles until here in Tuxpan, we were surrounded by thick jungle and banana plantations. The jungle was thicker than anything I've seen in Guatemala, the trees actually went over the road, and formed a canopy. It was beautiful, but aggravating because the road was in such poor condition.

We arrived in Tuxpan at around 7:30pm, we made our way to the Holiday Inn, and I think that this is perhaps the nicest hotel I've stayed in this entire trip. It's too dark to take pictures of the outside, but it's a tall six story building with metal "vines" covering the side of the hotel. Here are some pics of the inside.

I'm not sure what we're doing tomorrow, either we're staying here for a day, or we're continuing our conquest of Mexico. No matter what though, I'll be sure to share it with you.
